2023 is here, and it’s time to start saving money. One of the main expenses for cord cutting is home internet. Now that it’s 2023, there are some great ways to save money on home internet, especially if you have had the same plan for a few years now.
Here are a few tips to help you save money on home internet in 2023.
#1 Change Internet Providers
Sadly the truth is, most internet companies give the best deals to new customers so why not change? No, really, you can change internet providers now.
Increasingly most Americans now have access to multiple internet providers where they live. With the launch of wireless home internet from Verizon and T-Mobile, there are many great options. Add in SpaceX’s Starlink service, and many rural Americans now have internet options.
Let’s not forget Fiber internet from companies like AT&T and CenturyLink. Increasingly, fiber internet is now available and can offer the same or better speeds as your cable internet.
Switching internet providers may be annoying for a short time It could help you save hundreds. Even just saving $20 a month will result in $240 a year in savings.
#2 Get Your Own Modem?
Did you know in many areas, Comcast now charges $15 a month for their modem? That’s $180 a year just for the modem!
You can buy a gigabit modem for less than that on Amazon! (Here is a great example of one on Amazon.) Meaning that before the year is out, you will have saved money by buying your own modem. Just make sure you buy a modem that works for your internet provider.
#3 Lower Your Internet Speed
The truth is most of us are overpaying for the internet because we never use the speed we pay for.
According to Netflix you only need 15 Mbps down to stream a 4K/Ultra HD video. That means 4 4K Netflix streams only need 60 Mbps. So most cord-cutters do not need 1,000 Mbps when just 200 or 300 Mbps is more than enough to stream, surf the web, and have all the other internet-connected devices work in your house.
So maybe look into lower-speed options from your current provider to save money.
#4 You May Qualify For Subsidized Internet
Did you know that if you have kids in school (K-12 and college), you may qualify for Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program, aka SNAP? There is also the FCC’s Emergency Broadband Benefit to help low-income families get affordable internet.
Many providers, including AT&T, even off free internet to those who qualify with the Access & the Affordable Connectivity Program. You can learn more about that HERE.
So do some research and see if you may get some free internet.
In the end, saving money on home internet but an hour of work could save you $240 or more on home internet if you just lower your bill by $20 a month.
